English smocking originated in England. It was used as buttons on cuffs and collars. It reduces fabric waste while maintaining elasticity and movement. However, due to the industrial revolution, smocking fell out of use. Until the Victorian era, smocking became associated with high-quality and upscale clothing. Even royal princesses have worn smocking dresses.
